Casey McCarty
Chief Operating Officer of Columbus Idea Foundry
Two years ago when I first discovered the Foundry, I fell in love with the vision of this place: a community resource for democratized design and fabrication. We lower the barrier to entry for bringing ideas to life and to market, and that truly empowers entrepreneurs. Not a welder or a machinist? No background in engineering? No problem.Today’s Makers can learn how all the cool toys work. What we call the Maker Movement represents a renewed, modernized spirit of the industrial revolution: a passion for making and building again.Intrinsically, we can all glean a sense of pride from creating something physical with our own two hands—a visceral incarnation of what first set humans apart from beasts: the power to wield tools and make things.I found the Foundry while searching for a creative community and resources to help develop my own business. At the time, my freshly earned Master’s degree wasn’t terribly useful in the throes of the recession, and was loathe to drain my energies on a job that I hated. As a third-generation entrepreneur, it seemed an obvious choice to launch a “practice” starter business–something through which I could learn to navigate the small business world: creating a product and process, product photography, e-commerce, forging relationships with local retailers, networking, creating a web presence, social media, etc. This process of trial and error proved incredible experiences and I reccommend ‘just starting’ to anyone keen on testing the entrepreneurial waters. It is a deeply-held belief of mine that entrepreneurship is a recession-proof skill. While the nature of the employer-employee relationship is perpetually evolving, sometimes unfavourably to the worker, there is some product or service that nearly every single one of us can do which we can grow into a business. It takes a ridiculous quantity of hard work, but as Matt, Alex, and I can all attest as we count down one 50, 60, 70 hour week after another, often it hardly feels like work at all.
